The first Indian-rooted UK Prime Minister
Britain’s first Prime Minister of Indian descent, Rishi Sunak has officially assumed office. The youngest British prime minister in two centuries is a devout Hindu former Chancellor of the Exchequer who is 42 years old. He is also the first Hindu Prime Minister of Britain. Sunak is now the new role model for the young Indians.
In less than six years and three months, the UK has already had five different prime ministers. The people involved, such as Liz Truss and Boris Johnson, are unquestionably the reason for this melodramatic situation. But it also reflects serious issues with the UK economy that the crisis in Ukraine has cruelly worsened.
Despite the broad perception that PM Rishi Sunak is far more capable than his predecessor, all of this adds up to serious problems for him.
Rishi Sunak made a commitment to prioritize honesty, competence, and accountability in government during his first speech as prime minister. This commitment should be eagerly welcomed since research indicates that the public values honesty and integrity in its elected officials, as critics and experts have consistently voiced concerns about declining constitutional standards in recent years.
Rishi Sunak comes from a very varied background. He received his education in both the US and the UK. East Africa and Punjab were the homelands of his grandparents. In the 1960s, his parents immigrated to the UK from East Africa. Additionally, his wife is the Infosys founder’s daughter.
At Oxford, Sunak pursued economics and political science. He graduated with an MBA from Stanford University. The young Indians look up to him.
Sunak is now in the rare position of participating in both contemporary Britain and contemporary India. Given the countries’ shared interests, India-UK connections are expected to strengthen. However, the U.K.-India Free Trade Agreement will be a significant key test for how much political capital Sunak is prepared to commit to this crucial project.
In the British Parliament, Rishi Sunak has been chosen five times as a member of parliament. One of the wealthiest MPs in Britain, he has an estimated net worth of more than Rs 7300 crore.
This might be the beginning of a new era for everyone. It may offer a glimpse of a society in which change and advancement coexist peacefully with knowledge and traditions. All individuals may respect and cherish their cultural heritage and customs.
Indians are increasingly achieving success in a variety of foreign domains. The ambitions and energy of the Indian and NRI populations are represented through Sunak. The continued global success of Indian cultural customs and beliefs fills them with pride.
The story of Rishi Sunak inspires us that we the young Indians too have the capability to become the next prime minister of the country.
